Synopsis

Like Everyone Else

A teenage girl who runs away after failing to be “normal“ and navigate social situations later finds out that she has autism.

Simone Peachman, a nineteen-year-old girl with “high functioning” autism struggles to fit in. Since childhood, she is always wishing to be seen as “normal.” She thinks that her life would be better if she was like everyone else, since she struggles socially. This sentiment grows with her until her first year at university, when she actively tries to mask her peculiar behaviour, hoping she will finally be accepted by her family and peers. Humiliation, neglect, feeling invisible and feeling misunderstood drive her to the edge of life. At the height of neglect and marginalisation, she has a meltdown and doesn’t make it home. After days of searching for her by her friend and sister, she is found on the streets. Her sister takes her to see a psychiatrist who diagnoses her with autism spectrum disorder, and educates her and her sister about it.
